Richard Shafer

After graduating, he moved to Fort Worth where he began work on a masters degree in percussion performance at Texas Christian University. Participating with various university ensembles, Richard was a featured performer at the Texas Music Educators Association convention twice, the Havanna Jazz Festival in Havanna, Cuba and at NYC’s Merkin and Carnegie Halls. He completed his degree in 2011 and has continued to pursue both his playing and teaching careers locally and abroad. He played drums aboard the Celebrity Cruises cruise ship Solstice from 2011 to 2012 and is currently playing regularly with Texas Country artist Gary Kyle and the Converge Band at Christ Chapel Bible Church. Richard currently teaches students in FWISD and at the SOAR Music School in Southlake. He also freelances as a performer and studio musician in the metroplex.

Influenced at an early age by a musical family, Richard gravitated towards music - specifically drums and percussion - as an elementary school student. Participating in band programs all throughout his middle and high school years, he learned and performed in classical percussion settings, drumlines, and discovered a love for the drumset as a part of his early musical journey.

Richard went on to earn a Bachelor of Music Education degree form the University of Oklahoma where he was a member of the university’s percussion ensemble, steel drum band, jazz ensemble, basketball bands, wind symphony, and drumline. It was here also that Richard began his professional playing and teaching career, picking up various gigs  as a drumset player, taking many performance opportunities, and serving as a pert time instructor to high school percussionists.
